Photo Journal: Bela Falls, one of Congo’s best secrets

Why go to a place like Congo if we weren’t going to try to get out of the city a bit and explore?  Well, one of our friends had heard of some waterfalls a few hours north of the city and was convinced we could find it if we just asked people directions along the way.  Put bluntly, we had a crappy map and no idea where to actually go, but we piled into the tiny Suzuki that some wonderful friends had lent to us and took off.  Luckily, everyone in the car was of the mindset that an adventure is made better by having left many things unplanned and then just figuring them out along the way.  We were bullied by a few folks who were smash drunk on palm wine insisting that if we didn’t let them bum a ride with us, we were absolutely sure to get lost.  Luckily, the car was packed to the brim which gave us a handy excuse to turn them down politely.  Despite not paying a local guide we did eventually find the falls, even if it wasn’t until the next day.  Unfortunately I could never capture this part on camera, but when nightfall came, the moon and stars were so bright you could actually still see one another’s faces!  Cheers to some great campfire discussions with some AMAZING friends!  As I’m one who likes an “off the beaten path” kind of trip, this one completely surpassed all expectation.

Although I’m now back in the US, my hubby is doing a second trip out to these falls this weekend.  Wish I could go with him.  Wish you could too!

  1. I love the running photos with commentary! Looks like a great getaway: the falls are lovely, but the night sky would have been the winner for me. And I agree, winging it adventures are the best, especially if everyone along with you is ready to go with the flow.
